1.     Name four artists on currently on your playlist/ipod.

I am constantly listening to music. Looking at it today I see: Dessa, Mendelsshon, The Dead Milkmen, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee

2.     What was the last piece of gear you bought? Why? Regrets or is this a must have for everyone?

I just picked up an Antelope Zen Studio Plus interface for my home studio. It’s a fantastic little unit with an FPGA chip to power a huge assortment of plug ins as well as 12 mic preamps, 8 more channels of I/O on DB 25 connections, 16 channels of I/O via ADAT, 2 Reamp outputs and a lot more. We are just getting to know each other, but so far I feel a lot of love in the air!

3.     Tell us about a current project you are working on.

Today I am launching a new music video for my song “San Francisco Love Affair” (see video above) which I produced with two of TRAC’s finest alumni, Alex and Abby Boehnline. We worked hard on this for several months and are very excited to send it out into the world. The song appeared on my latest solo album “Country Mouse, City Mouse – Act 1,” which I co-produced with Studio West Chief Engineer, Ben Hasdovic.

4.     What is your “go to” karaoke song?

I rarely ever do karaoke because I am usually already performing several nights a week in bars and clubs. However, the few times I’ve been roped in it’s always Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog. I love frogs, the color green and banjos.

5.     If you could spend the day with one celebrity or industry influencer, who would it be and why?

Hmmm, tough question…probably Tom Waits. He has been a major influence on my music and lyrics over the years. I think it would be quite an experience to get a small glimpse of what his life must be like being such an eccentric artist and all.

6.     What instruments do you play?

Guitar, vocals, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, bass, bouzouki, ukulele, hammered dulcimer and a bit of keyboards and percussion, etc.

7.     Time to name drop—who have you worked with so far?

I’ve had the honor of working on stage and in the studio with a lot of great people over the years. Some of the most memorable for me because of how cool they conducted themselves are Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels (Run DMC), Marvin Hamlisch (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and Pulitzer Prize awards), Des McAnuff (The Who’s Tommy, Jersey Boys). For the past 10 years or longer, I’ve worked extensively with Tim Flannery (SF Giants) and Steve Poltz (wrote Jewel’s hit song, You Were Meant For Me).

8.     What is the most interesting thing you have read/seen this week?

Well, there’s been a lot of interesting news this week, but nothing thrilled me more than watching my 9 year old son pitch a no-hitter in his little league Tournament of Champions and my 12 year old son winning an award for his jazz guitar playing at a middle school Jazz Festival put on by Coronado School of the Arts. I know, I know…annoying “Proud Dad” moment.

9.     What do you think will surprise recent grads the most when they finish the program and start working in the industry?

It’s a very competitive world out there but what I think will surprise them most is how rapidly they will witness technology changing before their eyes. The tools, trends and techniques of today will not be the same tomorrow. What I hope will be a pleasant surprise to them is how they are able to adapt, learn and constantly re-invent themselves with the changes. For this is the key to longevity in this business.
