The Sphinx organization—founded 20 years ago to promote diversity in the arts—has been part of Annelle Gregory’s life for many years. In addition to touring with the Sphinx Virtuosi in 2010 and playing with them at Carnegie Hall, she was a Laureate of the junior division twice, and also a Laureate of the senior division twice before finally winning 1st Prize and the Audience Choice Award at this year’s recently-held competition in Detroit. “It brought tears to my eyes when they announced my name,” says Annelle. “This was like my dream finally coming true!”
Winning the Sphinx competition has already brought opportunities for Annelle, including performances with orchestras across the nation and in the best venues. In addition to the $50,000 cash award, she will also receive a custom-made violin bow. “It’s being crafted right now,” Annelle says.
Annelle, a senior at USC’s Thornton School of Music, first visited Studio West when she auditioned for RB Chorale’s competition for graduating high school seniors—a competition she won, along with five others. She came back to Studio West in 2014 to record her first CD, Annelle K. Gregory & Alexander Sinchuk: Grieg, Mozart, Szymanowski. Annelle says, “That was a very important experience for me in my career because not only did I get a wonderful-sounding CD from Studio West (which has been aired multiple times on KUSC Radio), it also prepared me for future recordings like my new CD on the Bridge Records label.”
Annelle will graduate from USC in May, and will continue to play recitals and concerts with orchestras throughout the U.S. and abroad, and she’ll also start teaching violin and viola part-time at a local studio.
