The illegitimate daughter of the Wizard of Oz visited Studio West recently. That is, the actress who played the part of Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked came to the studio recently for a voice-over session. Shedding her black cloak and witch's hat, Eden Espinosa recorded four episodes as Cassandra, Rapunzel's tenacious sidekick in a new Disney TV series, Tangled: Before Ever After, a spin-off of the movie Tangled that is scheduled for debut in February of 2017.
Espinosa, who as Elphaba enraptured thousands with breathtaking solos, joins a cast that includes Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as the quirky Flynn Rider.
While Espinosa has bounced across the country with musical tours, it seems appropriate that she lands near Hotel del Coronado, where author Frank Baum stayed for months at a time and wrote at least three of the books in the Oz series. Espinosa is in San Diego starring as Sadie Thompson in a production of Somerset Maugham's "Rain," playing now at The Old Globe.
For the session, we connected with Disney Studios in Burbank with a standard high fidelity line (ISDN), but also set up a tablet with a Skype connection so the animators could watch Eden's facial expressions for future reference in creating the cartoon.
