Alex Gehring graduated from The Recording Arts Center in May of 2016 and soon after landed a job at SIR Studios in New York City. In business since 1967, SIR Studios is the nation’s largest music equipment rental and production facility, with an impressive client list that includes The Rolling Stones, Jay Z, Lou Reed, The Ramones, Mariah Carey, The Roots, and Paul Simon. Alex credits his training at The Recording Arts Center as critical to successful job interview. “Because of the huge scope of the education and the practical experience that I received from Studio West I’ve been given these fabulous opportunities,” Alex says.
At SIR he’s a resident engineer working with both audio and backline. He also works sound at BlueNote New Yorks Subrosa Night Club, a Latin and Jazz club. “I was not planning to work in live sound,” Alex says, “but it’s a testament to the curriculum that I was able to attain a position working at my current capacity, which allows me not only to financial stability- it allows me to continue doing freelance work in the studio environment as well.”
Alex has worked with some talented artists, including Rass Kass, Paroahe Monch, and DJ Premier, and also some that he’s not allowed to talk about because of his contract. “I can’t tell you who they are,” Alex says, “but because of my time at Studio West, I have the foundation and the confidence to walk into any situation knowing exactly how to handle it.”
Alex’s mother, Beth Schreibman Gehring, is thrilled at her son’s new career. “I can’t say enough wonderful things about Studio West,” Beth says. “What they’ve taught him and given him as far as experiences completely exceeded our expectations. He has a resume starting out that would take most three years to accumulate. There’s nothing like watching your kid become exactly who he’s meant to be.”
